Rows of old fruit trees, gnarled and heavy with pears no one has come to pick. A ladder still leans against one trunk, as if someone meant to come back for it.

The trees were planted in rows by somebody with a plan, and have been gnarling out of them ever since. Fruit goes over on the branch and comes down in its own time, so the whole plot smells faintly of sugar turning. The ladder is still against the third tree. It has stood there long enough for the grass to grow up through the rungs.
